Hello Joe,
I visit your site daily and much appreciate the style and content of you writing, as well as the correspondence you post. I have read everything you posted on the site to date. My question is: Have I already read Deer Hunting with Jesus: Dispatches from America's Class War on the installment plan?
Regards,
Jim

Hi Jim,
No, the book is different, new material, although the first chapter has some big chunks of the Burt's Tavern scenes because it was simply the easiest way to introduce some of the folks who show up later in the book. Some of the topics are the same (because they are core issues of the American class divide) but we go much deeper into them. For example, from her prison cell Lynndie England describes why she did what she did, and the part about fundamentalist religion (even though it has the same name as one of my essays -- Covert Kingdom -- takes us much deeper into the subject and introduces people like my brother, who casts out demons, etc. There are up-close chapters on nursing homes and guns, credit card scams run against working people. Stuff like that. About four of the topics I have written essays on, but these chapters are much deeper and longer examinations.
Thanks for asking. I never stopped to think that people might think this book was a collection of online essays.
In art and labor,
Joe
